Leadership Academy

Vision

leadership & power building

The Leadership Academy, an innovative program led by Virginia Community Voice (VACV) and an integral component of the RVA Thrives Initiative, is dedicated to nurturing the leadership potential of people from the Richmond Highway Corridor community. This dynamic initiative provides a platform for emerging leaders to explore their capabilities, engage in meaningful dialogue, and drive positive change within their community. Our initial cohort is anticipated to be 15 neighbors.

Key Components:

  1. Leadership Development Workshops: The Leadership Academy offers a series of interactive workshops designed to equip participants with essential leadership skills and competencies. Through engaging activities and discussions, participants delve into topics such as communication, teamwork, decision-making, and conflict resolution, empowering them to become effective leaders in their communities.

  2. Civic Engagement Projects: A central focus of the Leadership Academy is engaging participants in hands-on civic engagement projects. From organizing community events to leading advocacy campaigns, participants are encouraged to identify and address pressing issues facing their neighborhood. By actively participating in projects aligned with their interests and passions, participants develop a sense of agency and responsibility, driving meaningful change from within.

  3. Mentorship and Guidance: The Leadership Academy benefits from the mentorship of experienced community leaders and professionals who provide guidance, support, and inspiration to participants. Through one-on-one mentoring sessions, guest speakers, and networking opportunities, neighbors gain valuable insights into leadership practices and are encouraged to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.

  4. Community Impact and Empowerment: Through involvement in the Leadership Academy, neighbors not only develop leadership skills but also contribute to positive community development. By initiating projects that address local needs and concerns, participants become catalysts for change, inspiring their peers and community members to take action and create a brighter future for all.

The Leadership Academy recently completed a thorough design process for the academy, culminating in a robust curriculum tailored to equip participants with diverse skills and knowledge. The academy will recruit from local residents and existing RVA Thrives members, focusing on creating a bilingual program to accommodate our diverse community. We anticipate enrolling 12-15 adult participants in the inaugural cohort. The curriculum is designed to include six workshops covering a range of critical topics, including leadership skills, technology support, and preparatory training for active involvement in working groups and steering committees.

Why this matters

The new South Richmond Leadership Academy honors the expertise of directly impacted people. It supports Black and Latine/x neighbors to reclaim the power they have been told for too long they don’t have and offers a space where they can exercise that power and develop leadership skills. What makes the academy unique is it’s design. The fellowship is being co-created with the participants themselves.

Since fall 2022, we have been listening to the community to understand what is wanted from a leadership program. Here’s what we have heard so far.
